Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Alberta

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the University of Alberta/Stollery Children's Hospital is dedicated to the provision of state-of-the-art care to critically ill children up to 17 years of age.

The PICU is staffed by an interdisciplinary team including pediatric intensive care physicians, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dieticians and therapists.

All forms of pediatric critical illness are managed at the Stollery Children's PICU.  It serves as the referral center for the Western Canadian Heart Network and receives approximately 450 children/year post-open heart surgery, making it the second busiest congenital heart surgery program in Canada.  It is the ECMO and VAD referral site for most of Western Canada and is a Level I Trauma Center.   The Stollery Children's Hospital Transport Team is run out of the PICU as well.
